One of the main activities of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean between 1940 and the end of 1942 was the transfer of convoys to and from Malta. However, there were periods in which it was particularly difficult and risky trying to provide supplies to the island; as an emergency measure, they were then carried out by individual trips, unaccompanied without the assistance of minelayers, cargo ships and submarines.en_GB
