dc.description.abstractSince the early days following the Second World War in the Mediterranean, the Royal Navy tried to launch a vigorous campaign against the Italian traffic to and from the Libyan coast. The most suitable geographical base to act for this purpose in the central Mediterranean waters was definitely Malta. The island, however, was too close to the Italians airports of Sicily and as a result, its ports were unsafe for the continuing berthing of warships and the submarines were the only warships that they could lean on a regular basis in Malta from mid 1940 to the late 1942.en_GB
