Abstract: This thesis explores children's discourse in Early Childhood Education on the topic of loss of biodiversity, aiming to understand their perspectives and insights, whilst aiming to highlight the notion of children as capable beings and complex thinkers. The study employed a qualitative approach, utilising two sets of semi-structured group interviews with a total of three groups, each consisting of four children. The interviews provided a platform for the children to express their thoughts, narratives, experiences, and concerns regarding loss of biodiversity. To further analyse and compare their discourse, concept maps were created based on the transcripts based on the first set of interviews and then compared to the concept maps generated from the second set of interviews. The findings shed light on the children's evolving understanding and awareness of loss of biodiversity over time. Between the two sets of interviews the children were exposed to educational sessions, where they explored the topic “The Environment around us”. The results indicate that the children's discourse expanded, deepened, and showed increased complexity in the second set of interviews, suggesting a positive impact on both interview process and the educational sessions on their understanding of the topic. This study underscores the significance of engaging children in discussions about environmental issues and highlights the potential of concept maps as a valuable tool for capturing and analysing children's discourse on complex topics such as loss of biodiversity.
