Abstract: Vitamin B1 serves as an important cofactor in body metabolism and energy production. A lack of Vitamin B1 affects several organ systems, in particular the cardiovascular and nervous system. The cardiac insufficiency caused by Vitamin B1 deficiency is known as cardiac beriberi. Herein, a case study of a thirty year old male diagnosed with beriberi is discussed, describing the medical tests implemented, the way beriberi manifests itself in the patient and the treatment provided. The main outcome of this study shows that alcoholics who do not eat enough B1 containing foods, consequently develop heart failure.
