Abstract: This study focuses on the term media literacy which for the purpose of this dissertation has been defined as the ability to interpret, critically evaluate as well as communicate effectively and persuasively through the use of multiple media. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the media literacy approach, which is being used in Form 3 PSCD classes in Maltese girls' Catholic schools to help tackle body-image issues. Research questions to evaluate whether and to what extent media literacy as a pedagogical tool is proving successful to equip female adolescents to interpret media messages concerning body-image were explored through semi-structured interviews with four PSCD teachers as well as through six focus groups with Form 3 students from three girls’ Catholic schools in Malta. The study concludes that teachers lack training opportunities related to the implementation of media literacy as a pedagogical tool. In addition, based on the direct link identified between family dynamics and the behaviour of adolescents, this research suggests that the provision of educational programmes for parents would be beneficial to help them address body image issues of the children in their care. Finally, to maximize the benefits of media literacy, this study proposes the introduction of the discussed approach at an earlier stage in one’s formal education. Considering the ever-growing media-saturated culture we are immersed in, this dissertation emphasises how the media literacy approach could benefit not only students, but also the rest of the community and society at large.
