Abstract: The arrangement in Malta whereby every applicant for a driving licence is examined by a medical practitioner and any "abnormal" case is referred to the Chief Government Medical Officer for advice is described. A dossier of such cases has been building up throughout these last eight years and certain rules or guide-lines on physical disability, mental disorder, cardiac disease and other conditions have emerged. The classification of licences and the categories of drivers are outlined. Furthermore, the fitness standards required for driving are discussed. The periodic medical examination of public-service vehicle drivers is recommended.
