Insulin therapy in type 1 diabetes is recommended as multiple dose injections (MDI) or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) to deliver a basal background insulin dose together with bolus insulin doses prior to meals. Use of automated bolus calculators and / or continuous glucose monitors with MDI have been shown to improve glycaemic control in type 1 diabetes patients. Several models of insulin pumps with various features are available. CSII offers greater flexibility with a reduced number of injections but in view of its complexity, patients who will benefit from this therapy need to be carefully selected.en_GB
