Abstract: Using a global analytic framework, this paper reviews the concept of islandness and its associated concept of smallness, using the islands of Germany as the point of departure. It proposes experiential and conceptual definitions of what is a small island and contrasts these with more rationalist and materialist approaches. It also appeals for a deeper understanding of the role of the sea and of transportation networks in island life.
