Abstract: Medical Historian, Dr Paul Cassar, has undertaken a study on Diabetes in Malta. His contributions, besides giving us a deep insight into the history of diabetes in our islands, is a much deserved tribute of praise to those medical Maltese pioneers who, despite the meagre scientific knowledge of their time, strove to understand its pathology and to learn how to treat it. As has been the case with other studies and projects which he has undertaken, Dr Cassar has taken great pains to bring this work to fruition. He describes in detail, concepts and events, in the story of diabetes in the Maltese Island, of which the present generation is unaware; and he highlights the Maltese personalities, medical and lay, that stand as monoliths along the trail or endeavor which is now our responsibility to open up into the broad avenue of ultimate success.
