Abstract: Child friendships shape an individual’s personality and serve as one of the models for future relationships. Regardless of this, one finds little research with specifically focuses on how children themselves think about their friendships. Most researchers, who have studied the topic of child friendships, have viewed the topic from the adults’ point of view. This study focuses on exploring primary school children’s own perceptions about friendships, and exploring whether these change along with children’s development. To obtain children’s perceptions about the topic, a qualitative methodology was used. Eighteen, primary school children (nine from year 2 and nine from year 5) took part in one-to-one semi structured interviews. Age appropriate video clips were used to serve as conversation starters. Apart from using the children’s responses to identify children’s perceptions about friendship, the year 2 interviewees’ responses were compared with the year 5 interviewees’ responses in order to highlight whether children’s perceptions change along with their development. Both the positive and negative aspects of child friendships were identified in this research. This study concludes that one should be very cautious when dealing with child friendships, especially when bullying or anti social children are involved
