Abstract: Thinking about my personal experience as a secondary school student and from the observations I carried out as a student teacher, I realised that literature is often absent or misused in foreign language classes. It is my intention to study the use of literature in foreign language teaching. This study will seek information about various types of literature and how they can be used in a foreign language teaching classroom, to teach both language and culture. As part of the research a set of 15 lesson plans will be presented. Each lesson plan will include teaching resources, together with a feedback form which will be distributed to six teachers of Italian in different schools to carry out in their classrooms. The feedback given by teachers will then be analysed. The aim of this study is to assess different types of literature presented to all age and gender groups in secondary schools. This research also aims to show that different types of objectives can be reached through the use of literature in a foreign language class. Finally, the lesson plans will be tried out with students possessing different skills and different levels of motivation. The premise to be proven is that literature with a small ā€žlā€Ÿ is a useful teaching resource to be used by teachers in a foreign language class. This will be shown through feedback obtained from teachers after having carried out the lessons in class.
