Abstract: This research analyses the experiences PE teachers face when teaching gymnastics in Girls Secondary Schools. Through a qualitative study, the researcher was able to take an in-depth look at what goes on during a gymnastics lesson and how PE teachers feel both physically and mentally whilst teaching gymnastics in State, Church or Private/Independent schools. Through semi-structured interviews, the researcher investigated the available space and equipment required to teach gymnastics in seven schools, how teachers make use of these during gymnastics lessons, and how they plan, set-up and deliver a lesson. More findings show how PE teachers deal with their own challenges and fears, as well as the students’, and also how students behave during gymnastics lessons and how the teachers approach students who do not like the sport. Findings show that even though there is gymnastics equipment in schools, the subject is not being taught up to standard in certain schools. Storage, time management, challenges faced both by teachers and students has mainly to do with this problem. Other reasons are mentioned later in this dissertation.
