Malignant melanoma is a tumour which arises from melanocytes and usually proves to be rapidly fatal. It can occur at any site of the body where melanocytes exist including the choroid and ciliary body of the eyes, the skin and the ano-rectal region of the bowel. Ano-rectal malignant melanoma was first documented in 1857 by Moore. Over 400 such cases have been reported in the medical literature, up to 1984.en_GB
