The galleys were ships of war and, as such, had to carry a contingent of soldiers and a crew of sailors on board to fulfil the dual work of fighting and sailing. These freemen are usually referred to as Gente di Capo and, in general, they comprised the soldiers and sailors on board the galleys. Naturally, one finds subdivisions and what are termed in modern times non-commissioned officers among them because different expertises were needed.en_GB
