The donation of the Maltese archipelago to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, made by Charles V in March 1530, on the one hand put an end to eight years of pilgrimage of the Knights of Malta among several Mediterranean ports in search of a replacement instead of Rhodes (1522). On the other hand it served as a strategic military goal to counter Turkish expansion in the western Mediterranean. The emperor acted in that case as king of Sicily, from whom Malta has been a fief since the time of Norman recapture of the island, in 1091, by the great Count Ruggero.en_GB
