Campanella’s short treatise on historiography constitutes an element of crucial importance in his philosophical system, since it puts forward the thesis of history as the foundation of all other disciplines. The good historian is a master of his art, who, like a wise architect, lays the foundations for the renewal of the sciences and the development of a new ‘encyclopaedia of knowledge’. In Campanella’s unitary and universalistic perspective, this would have served as a catalyst for religious, scientific and political unification and advancement.en_GB
