Abstract: is paper considers some of the enduring characteristics of the landscape around Mġarr, and their inuence on human activity there. Its rst goal is to portray the landscape setting of the megalithic complexes of Ta’ Ħaġrat and Skorba, which are the central focus of this volume. A second goal is to consider the changing relationship between landscape and human activity, in a broader chronological setting. ree inter-connected metaphors for the Mġarr micro-region will be used as pegs for the argument. ese three metaphors are as inseparable as they may seem contradictory. ey are Mġarr as island, Mġarr as garden, and Mġarr as corridor.
