A new phase in the development of Malta's economic history was registered with the establishment of the Knights of St John in 1530. Prior to the arrival of the Order the local merchant's range of activity reflected the unrivalled regular sea-links with Sicilian ports which continued to be felt even after 1530. However, the naval organisation and fighting spirit of the Order, which excelled in seamanship, opened up new frontiers in the Levant, the Straits of Gibraltar and beyond. Furthermore, Malta's economy was stimulated when a proportion of the revenues from the Order's commanderies, which were spread all over Europe, was dispatched into the Common Treasury of the island.en_GB
