Colossians 1, 24 and Paul’s Theology of the Cross

Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to analyse the implications of Colossians 1, 24 and its relationship to the Pauline theology of Christ crucified. Col 1, 24 has given rise to countless questions and interpretations. What does Paul mean by filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ in his flesh? Through an exegesis of this verse and the section of which Colossians forms part, we aim to delve into the apparently contradictory nature of this verse, and its implications for the apostle and the Christian alike. . Moreover, we shall see how the notion put forth in Col 1, 24 is reflected in the rest of the prison letters, since these letters present an apt situation for the apostle to meditate on his tribulations and their meaning.
