Abstract: The discussion in this paper has been inspired by a beautiful portfolio of watercolours of anonymous production depicting eleven naval scenes ranging from 1647 to 1752, featuring the vessels of the Order of St John. This eighteenth-century leatherbound portfolio is housed in the rare book collection of The Malta Study Center (hereafter referred to as 'the Center') at the Hall Museum & Manuscript Library at Saint John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota. Each watercolour shows an event involving the navy of the Order, both the time-honoured galleys powered by oars and sail, and the newly introduced pascelli driven by sails.
