Abstract: Lifelong Learning has gained importance over the past years, especially because of the implications on one's career prospects, self actualisation, and social inclusion. There is no universal definition for lifelong learning however, it encompasses adult education, adult learning, continuous learning, and other terms which imply that learning takes place from 'cradle to grave'. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of lifelong learning within the Maltese Public Service. The Public Service employs thousands of public officers and takes lifelong learning seriously. A vast array of learning opportunities and scholarships are available to all those who are interested in improving their skills and knowledge to do their job better, to maintain a professional warrant or licence, or to simply learn about new topics. Lifelong learning is imperative for the majority of civil servants due to work and personal aspirations, albeit a substantial proportion of individuals believe that learning is restricted to academic curricula or have a laissez-faire approach towards learning. An extensive volume of officers have been occupying their current position for about a year; implying the importance of career progression and adult education to attain their aspirations. Formal education is the most common, followed by non-formal education through work-related and vocational education and training. Barriers and facilitators to lifelong learning were identified.
