Abstract: Chapter dealing with historical, social and cultural issues in Malta that have had an impact on language decisions. The historical linguistic battle for cultural dominance, referred to as 'the Language Question' by Geoffrey Hull provides a backdrop to issues of language choice in various domains. This study focuses on the domains of education and the medical sphere, as well as on the social and cultural implications of language use.
