dc.description.abstractAn account of Jesus' temptation by Satan occurs in each of the Synoptics (Mt 4:1-11; Mk 1:12-13; Lk 4:1-13). Even the most cursory reading of each of these accounts reveals certain similarities and not a few dissimilarities among them. The Markan account is terse and concise. The Matthean and Lukan accounts are much longer, and focus upon a dialogue between Jesus and Satan. In a word, a comparison of the three accounts of Jesus' temptation is a classical example of the Synoptic problem.en_GB
