Abstract: The present study investigates the occupational stress, job satisfaction, and coping strategies among PSD teachers. The data were collected by employing a self-administered questionnaire survey. The research, undertaken between November and December of 2008, reports findings from a sample of 147 Maltese and Gozitan PSD teachers from state, church and independent schools. The level of stress and satisfaction, the factors which contribute to the level of stress, and the coping actions employed by PSD teachers were investigated. The study also attempted to investigate group differences in terms of teacher sex and age. Findings show that PSD teachers are 'mildly' or 'moderately' stressful and that 'pupil misbehaviour' is the most stressful factor experienced by these teachers. No significant sex and age differences were observed. Furthermore, findings indicate that PSD teachers are very satisfied with teaching PSD as a job. The most popular coping strategies adopted by these PSD teachers are 'discuss pupil misbehaviour with him/herself', 'maintain a sense of humour' and 'plan fun activities for the students not to get bored easily'. Findings are discussed with the view of helping PSD teachers to cope better with the stressors of their work.
