Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of patients’ thoughts and perceptions about their experiences of General Practitioner (GP) consultations. A qualitative methodology, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), was employed. A fairly homogenous sample of four women, ranging from 45 to 71 years of age was interviewed during one-to-one, audio-recorded semi-structured interviews. The following five themes emerged from an in-depth analysis: Focus on the Relationship, Focus on the Relationship Dynamic, Doctor’s Various Roles, Values and Conduct, and Desirable Values Missing. Results show the importance for patients of a doctor who cares, listens, explains, and one who views the patient as an equal allowing the patients to be autonomous and active in decision-making. One recommendation is for future research on doctors’ thoughts and perceptions regarding the doctor-patient relationship. Another is a study focused on male patients. |
