The principles which govern the relationship between the legal capacities of children, the responsibilities of parents and the limits of State intervention are best exemplified in the field of medical decision-making. This is primarily because the health of children is evidently the most basic and essential element in protecting their welfare. It is therefore somewhat perplexing to discover that issues relating to child and parental rights in the context of consent continue to generate debate as a matter of conflict rather than consensus in the best interests of the child.en_GB
