Abstract: Separation between couples is a turbulent phase which brings with it a lot of pain and suffering. This study sheds light on the experience of professionals working with couples who separated and their perception on the factors leading to the separation. Thus, seven semistructured interviews were conducted with family therapists and counselling psychologists, which interviews were in turn analysed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest that the reasons behind separation are multifactorial. Most of the results in the study were coherent with the literature findings. These are: dimensions of relationship quality, infidelity, the influence of work and changes in gender roles, responsibilities within the family, difference in educational background, age at the time of marriage, gender and the decision to separate and domestic violence. This study hopes to contribute some insight into the problems that may lead couples to separate, while also recommending future research.
