dc.description.abstractOur knowledge of Grand Master Hompesch has generally been limited to the period when the French seized Malta and his surrender to Napoleon. The letters discovered by Dr Löhr in the archives of the Hompesch family in Jaroslavice confirm the underhanded plots that were going on against him. In addition to providing information about the man before he became grand master, they also provide details about his character and private life and that of members of his family.en_GB
