dc.description.abstract	Teodor Reljic discusses the research of Prof. Alex Felice, Dr. Joseph Borg and Clint Mizzi of the University of Malta. Based on medical data, they launched the ‘Maltese Genome Project’ in 2015 with the aim to map 1% of the local population. Their research disproves popular beliefs such as that of Phoenician decent and in turn traces Maltese roots to (Southern) Sicilian settlers & Arabic subculture. The project, which zones in on the Y chromosome haplogroups found across the Mediterranean spots some key commonalities, i.e: rare hereditary diseases. Their mission is identified to the potential in yielding substantial medical benefits.
