The article traces the Manichaean period in the life of Augustine of Hippo, in particular his dilemma when confronted with the problem of evil. After the presentation of a number of elements of Manichaean doctrine, the author delves into Augustine's struggle with the ages-old dilemma, and his eventual rejection of the gnostic philosophy. Reference is made especially to Augustine's ‘Confessiones’ and his ‘De moribus Manichaeorum’.en_GB
