In part one of this feature, Michael Galea provides an overview of what wartime life would have been like in Malta, from the everyday to the philanthropic efforts taken on by the people. He covers ground from government inflicted regulations (i.e: the prohibition of exporting local foods to ration better and maintain price levels), to the fundraising (& subsequently moral boosting) efforts taken on by the population in the form of musical, sports, theater entertainment. Next, Galea comments on the massive influx of hospital ships calling at Malta, carrying injured officers that would eventually be distributed to medical facilities across the island. Fallen heroes were buried according to their denomination and commemorated with memorial day services. The first part of this feature ends with the Maltese roll of honor during the Battle of Jutland (May 31st, 1916). Accompanied by photographs.en_GB
