Abstract: Recent fine structural and electrophysiological studies of the vomeronasal receptors in amphibians, reptiles and mammals(1-7) have shown that these cells are similar in many respects to typical olfactory receptors. The present paper deals with three aspects of the organisation of vomeronasal receptors: (a) their fine structure, (b) their maturation and (c) their enzyme histochemistry; it is hoped that our observations may help to clarify the organisation of olfactory receptors in general.
