Abstract: In 1860, when identification of various specific diseases was still confused in a large undifferentiated group of fevers, Jeffery Alien Marston, a graduate from St Andrews, who had come to Malta as Army Assistant Surgeon, contracted one of the fevers that prevailed in the Island. He took note of his own experiences and undertook the first detailed clinical study of fevers prevailing in the Mediterranean region. He then presented a masterly description of 'Mediterranean fever' which he established as a distinct disease (Marston, 1861).
