dc.description.abstract | As part of their Lifetsyle & Culture segment, The Malta Indipendent presents, Fr. Hermann Duncan’s article on renowned Maltese sculptor: Vincenzo Dimech. Born in Valletta in 1768, young Dimech was introduced to design and sculpture very early on at his father's studio. The article then goes onto map his academic training in Naples which ultimately led to his placement as a professor of Architecture and Sculpture at the School of Design, University of Malta. Demonstrating the demand for Dimech’s commissioned works, Fr. Hermann lists out a series of his well known religious and civil works throughout the island. These include: the upper and lower Baracca Gadens in Valletta, the parish church in Floriana, the collegiate basilica church of Birkirkara, the Mosta Rotunda, church of St Theresa in Cospicua, the parish church in Gudja, and the parish church of Zurrieq. The Maltese sculptor also made a name for himself abroad with his work inside the Royal Palace of Corfu, Greece. Featuring two images of his works, this article provides a great introduction to the timeline of Vincenzo Dimech’s life and artistic journey. | en_GB |
