The aim of this paper is to briefly describe the intensive care facilities available in the Paediatric Department and to review the work carried out in this unit. The Special Care Baby Unit (S.c.B.u.) in Karen Grech Hospital was opened in December 1979. It was designed to cater for the needs of newborn infants requiring special and intensive care. Very sick children up to the age of 3 years have also been looked after in the unit as it was felt that the adult Intensive Therapy Unit (LT.U.) was unsuitable for their needs. Thus the term S.c.B.u. is really incorrect as the unit is actually a Special Care Baby Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (N.LC.U.) and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (P.LC.U.) combined.en_GB
