Abstract: This chapter begins with an overview of features of the Maltese education system which are relevant to discussion or examinations. It then presents in detail the origins and development of the assessment system, its functioning and status, and its impact on teaching and learning. The implications of small size are brought out at various points, but are highlighted towards the end with particular emphasis on issues of visibility, accessibility, resourcing, role overload, and research capacity.
