Abstract: Comparative studies of education in small states remain glaring in their absence. We acknowledge and support the invitation to adopt a different approach in this volume, and we have decided on an asymmetrical triangular country framework as proposed by the book’s co-editors. We focus on pedagogic challenges in ECE in relation to the former British colonies and now small island states of Malta and Barbados, using their metropolitan patron, the UK, as backdrop and reference point.
