Abstract: Deaf Students in the Mainstream: Experiences of Inclusive Education Being deaf has its disadvantages, but some of the deaf individuals still succeed in achieving a post-secondary education, some even Degrees from Universities. This research aimed to reflect on the experiences of six young deaf adults, 18 years old or older, who have completed their secondary education. The focus is their education, particularly within secondary school. The study presents the deaf adults’ view of their experiences. This study used a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews which allowed the interviewees to talk about their experiences. Three interviews were conducted with signing participants accompanied by a Sign Language Interpreter while another three interviews were conducted with cochlear-implanted participants who used speech. All data was transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. The thematic analyses helped the researcher to get a better insight of the participants’ experiences. The main themes were identified more easily. These include overall experience as a Deaf student in a mainstream school; favourite and least favourite academic subjects; languages - Maltese and English in particular; friendship; professionals; classrooms; advantages and disadvantages of being Deaf; family and success. Results showed that if teachers accommodate and facilitate the learning of the deaf, the Deaf student will be able to succeed academically. Support from family and friends also help deaf students achieve their academic goals fully.
