Abstract: Maltese is the official language of the Republic of Malta, an archipelago of just 316 km2 in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, about 90 kilometres south of Sicily, and 280 kilometres north of Tunisia. Maltese is, on the one hand, the only European language with a very pronounced Arabic profile, and on the other hand, the only instance of a daughter-language of Arabic which is written in the Latin alphabet. Around eight centuries of isolation from the Arab world and close contact with Sicily, in particular, have transfonned Maltese Arabic into a fully-fledged modern language with its own literature. Although Maltese and the Arabic dialects are no longer mutually comprehensible, Maltese remains, in general, the closest language to Arabic.
