Abstract: The financial services industry has significant importance in the world economy. The industry is vast and encompasses various lines of business, and includes commercial and investment banking, financial advisory services, and insurance. Malta, a leading European financial centre, is a haven which combines high regulatory standards with a commercial outlook. Since Malta’s accession to the European Union (EU), the industry has reached high levels of growth and succeeded in becoming a sound financial system. This dissertation aims to gain an understanding of various aspects of the financial services industry and the importance of the intermediation role. This is done through a study of the different financial institutions and the services which they offer to the public. Furthermore, this dissertation looks at Malta’s Financial Services Industry; its institutions, characteristics, and regulatory framework. Finally, MiFID II, which has come into force in January 2018 and has had a significant impact on the local industry, is analysed. Data was collected through eight interviews conducted with professionals working in Malta’s Financial Services Industry, namely with representatives of banks and investment companies. The expertise provided by these professionals is central; their experience and knowledge provided the reliable information needed to carry out this study.
