Abstract: This dissertation explores in a comprehensive way the main characteristics of Scouting; a worldwide movement which ensures fun, exploration, adventure and opportunities, whilst fundamentally guaranteeing education for life. Investigated within the local context, the central focus of this study was the Troop section of the Scout Association of Malta. Through a mixed research approach, a greater understanding was acquired of how this non-formal educational system functions; hence underlining that learning does not only occur in a formal setting. The study was observed from three (3) different standpoints: the experience of young members coming from eight (8) different Troops, who are the users of this educational system; the leaders’ perspective of these Troops as the individuals who are implementing the programme; and the respective commissioners as the creators and reviewers of the said programme, participating in a questionnaire, a focus group session and semistructured interviews respectively. The research showed that the Scout Method is the fundamental educational tool and provided that it is applied properly through the correct medium, it offers a valuable and enjoyable learning experience to its young members. Consequently, this aids in their development in a more holistic approach. In addition to this, the impact of Scouting on its members and on the local community was measured, whilst the relevance of Scouting in today’s world was also explored and ensured. Ultimately, with all the results yielded and analysed, it was concluded that Scouting, as a nonformal system is ‘Creating a better World’.
