Abstract: This study revolves around the written production, more specifically, writing frames. These are templates consisting of starters, connectives and sentence modifiers which offer students a structure for communicating what they want to say. Writing frames help students to cure the ‘I don’t know how to start’ problem which is very common when students come face to face with a blank sheet of paper. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the benefits and utility of using writing frames in a foreign language (i.e. French) vis-à-vis a humanities lesson (i.e. History). Also, this study evaluated whether learners write more detailed, use more varied and precise vocabulary and articulate their ideas and arguments more coherently when they write without the use of writing frames vis-à-vis when writing with frames which were provided to them by the researcher. Through comparison and analysis of the results, it was concluded that History writing frames were very effective whereas French writing frames were less so. Notwithstanding this, there is still a way to introduce writing frames in both subjects although this must be done with caution. This study also gave indications that the present education system needs to change the methods and content of teaching, especially when coming to the written competence. Learners also filled in a questionnaire after this experience, in which they expressed how they felt when writing without and with the help of the provided writing frames.
