This study explored the themes of detachment and the relational within the life and the writings of the French mystic Simone Weil. This was done through intertextuality, using several primary and secondary sources. A number of sub-themes were selected and analysed to show the tension that these two seemingly opposite polarities can cause. Constant reference was made to the diverse socio-political movements that were developing at the time when Weil lived. The study also proposed a model of integration based on her life and writings, demonstrating that the apparent antagonism between these two main themes can be used as a vehicle for spiritual development and maturity. This study showed as well the relevance of the works of this mystic to contemporary society, particularly in the analysis of intimate one-to-one relationships. The main theological framework in this study was Catholic although it was also essential to refer to pre-Christian and Eastern religions due to the influence that these had on the spirituality of Simone Weil. This study also promoted the inter-disciplinary approach that can be fostered between various disciplines.en_GB
