Abstract: Background : This research examines the motivation of Maltese visitors in attending the Birgu Fest. Birgu Fest is a spectacular event where candlelight illuminates Vittoriosa’s beautiful structures and vibrant past. The event presents many cultural activities such as public access to museums, musical concerts, theatrical entertainment, dancing, and food and drinks. Objective : The main objective of this dissertation is to explore what motivates Maltese visitors to attend the cultural event in Birgu, the Birgu Fest. This study can serve as a structured reference point for local event planners who are trying to attract visitors or enrich their events. Method : Research was first done through secondary sources such as academic journals. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Maltese citizens (who are not residents of Birgu) who at least visited Birgu Fest once at some point in their life. Main conclusions : Different conclusions were observed in the results, indicating that historical and cultural value, emotional connection and community feeling, experiential (on-island) tourism, destination image and authenticity all stirred the visitors to attend the event in Birgu. The antiquity of the location and its uniqueness, the sight of antique buildings lit up by candlelight and the participation of the locals were noted as motivators. The food and the activities were not found to be significant attributes that motivated the visitors to attend the event. Suggestions : Due to the lack of interest in the activities and more appreciation towards the history and culture, activities can be transformed into having a more historical and cultural component. Due to the appreciation towards the legends and the history, walking tours, nighttime ghost walking tours or even haunted homes walking tours could be a valuable idea for visitors to highlight the rich legends and history within Birgu. The presence and the quality of the food served at Birgu Fest could also be improved.
