dc.description.abstract | The Online Gaming Industry started in the early 1990s. When Malta joined the EU in 2004, it became the first country to enact comprehensive legislation on Online Gaming, allowing major successful companies within this industry to move their operations and headquarters to Malta. Certain drivers of change such as technology, regulations and globalization can immediately force online gaming companies to reiterate their strategy to maintain their competitive advantage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the major changes performed by online gaming companies within this industry in order to stay competitive. This in return allowed an overall strategic insight on what such companies require to perform to obtain a competitive advantage. A comprehensive literature review was done with relation to this subject to obtain an understanding of study itself. It was noted that literature related to this subject was scarce. A qualitative methodological approach was used to conduct semi-structured interviews. The selected sample group consisted of ten online gaming veterans, all having over ten years’ experience within the online gaming industry. The data gathered was analysed through the use the thematic analysis. The results showed the main factors that help to stay competitive within this rapidly changing industry. Such factors include the changes online gaming companies had to perform and the challenges that such companies faced whilst implementing such changes. Also, good and bad strategy factors emerged, together with the future changes currently planned and being executed at the time of the study. Furthermore, the dissertation concludes by recapitulating the findings and providing further opportunities of research areas. | en_GB |
