The Maltese population has repeatedly been shown to have a high high prevalence of DM/IGT, mainly of the Type 2 form. This high prevalence is reflected in the pregnant population. Epidemiological studies have suggested that the prevalence of diabetic disorders in the Maltese pregnant population approximates 6%, including a small proportion of pre-existing DM. In addition, a further 5.6% have elevated values that may reflect a tendency towards a relative hyperglycaemia with the possibility of adverse outcomes.en_GB
