Abstract: | When Nikolaus Pevsner described the difference between Lincoln Cathedral and a bicycle shed he made the clear distinction between the former as ‘an architectural masterpiece’ and the latter possibly a home made ‘self-designed building’. So what exactly do we mean by architecture and good aesthetic design? Pevsner together with Le Corbusier, Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Adolf Loos and many other pioneers of the 20th century revered architecture as an upper-class artistic expression made through a building put to a good use. Building construction processes were therefore a means to an end, servile to the architecture of the leading architect. Aesthetics and design, in their broadest sense, are married as one through Architecture, the latter always considered seminal to the arts. On the other hand construction and structural design are considered a building science in its own right – yet not completely divorced from architecture. But is there reason for any departure? No good architecture emanates from a poor structure and no good structure is dressed up in poor architecture. Classical examples include Cologne’s Gothic Cathedral and Nervi’s Sala dei Congressi in Rome. Both Lincoln Cathedral and the bicycle shed have their own structural soundness and aesthetic appeal – albeit in their respective environment. |
