This dissertation examines the historical development of the electricity market in Malta and in Europe and the nature of electricity as legally interpreted as a free movement of good within the Internal Market. This dissertation also looks into the development of Competition within this sector, and the three electricity directives that shape Competition in electricity today. Particular attention is given to Malta’s position and the sui generis system that it has adopted in line with the energy directives mentioned. Consideration is also given to environmental implications on the electricity sector. Finally, this dissertation analyses the electricity projects that are in the pipeline in Malta, particularly the Interconnector between Sicily and Malta.en_GB
