dc.description.abstractMuch of the farming in Malta is of the subsistance type; the farmer employing little hired labour, growing few crops for export and disposing of his produce at the local pitkali or vegetable market. Potatoes, onions, oranges and cumin seed are grown for export; the first of these being by far the most important. There are 9,400 agricultural holdings in Malta and the cultivated area is 35,475 acres. It can be seen therefore that the size of the holdings is very small. About 2,701 acres are under irrigation, and these irrigated lands, the most valuable in the island, produce two or even three crops per year.en_GB
