dc.description.abstractThe map showing the use of the land in Malta has been specially drawn for the Malta Year Book of I955. It is of the greatest interest to architects, geographers, sociologists and students in general. Perhaps the most striking fact shown on the map is the great extension of built-up areas around the Dockyard and Valletta. Anyone who travels from St. Elmo on the seaward end of the capital, could walk westwards as far as Lija and Attard and eastwards to Tarxien without ever being out of sight of houses. The reason for this conurbation is the fact that people like to live near their work. This built up area of Greater Valletta is still growing, especially around St. Julian's and Hamrun.en_GB
